Vanity Domain Names: Good Idea Or Just Sad?

JohnSmithPersonalTraining.com may seem like a good idea as the domain name of your local personal training business, certainly when you get started, but from my perspective it is bad business practice. Certainly if you have pretentions to sell your business in future, John Smith Personal Training is just not the same without John Smith right?

And if you’ve invested years building up the search rankings for that domain, then all that is worth nought when you come to sell.

One of the best moves I made right at the start of my Personal Training business is I called it GetFit.lu, rather than Tim Goodwin PT. This was purely accidental I must add, but when it came to selling the business I could sell the name and the website and all its search engine ranking and have it as a valuable asset I could add to the sale of the business.

Domains with geographic identifiers are certainly worth more, because of the ease of getting it ranked on to google’s first page. For example personaltrainerluxembourg.com was certainly very easy to rank for the search term “Personal Trainer Luxembourg”.

Should We Own YourName.com Domain?

Anyway, back to the original thought… should we actually buy vanity domains? For example is there any value in buying YourName.com?

From a search engine perspective I don’t believe there is much value, especially if you have a fairly common name or you share a name with someone famous. For example, there is a film director by the name of Tim Goodwin, who owns the domain of the same name, which is kinda irritating, and it means most search results for my name show this Director dude and not me!

I’ve owned for years now the domain timgoodwin.eu the .info and the .net just to take ownership of as much personal real estate as I could. But the other day I had a real “doh” homer simpson moment… why not include my middle initial, which is what I do for most of my social media accounts anyway!

So I bought the timdgoodwin.com domain.

What am I going to use it for?

Well to be honest I don’t know! :)

Most likely I’ll build a simple website which links to all stuff Tim Goodwin. So Tim Goodwin the Fitness Professional, Tim Goodwin the Entrepreneur, The Mountain Biker, the speaker, the SEO consultant.

It means if I go to a seminar like the event I was at at the weekend(not a fitness industry event), I at least have somewhere to send people to!

As the world (online at the very least) becomes more of an exercise in Personal Branding, then planet YOU needs to have a home.

Go check out to see if YourName.com is still available… If the simple form of your name is not then don’t forget about middle initials, or even adding “Iam” or “Meet” to the front of your name, eg. IamPaulMort.com or MeetJoeBlack.com

In the comments section below tell me if you own your own name domain name, and make sure you add it as a link.

Five Cool Tools For Search Engine Optimisation

To most Fitness Professionals, Search Engine Optimisation is probably the most unsexy, uncool subjects, until you realise how powerful it can be. I created a video last week on how much #1 on Google is worth to your Fitness Business, which soon perks up peoples interest in the subject!

59% of consumers check Google for information about local business, If your business doesn’t appear on the front page of Google you simply don’t exist! Here are this weeks Five Cool Tools based on SEO tools I use in my own business… Some of these will surprise you I think.

1. Google Keyword Tool

It is more important to know what people are ACTUALLY searching for rather than what your want them to find you for. This distinction is difference between winning and losing in the Search Engine game.

The Google Keyword Tool will very quickly tell you what is actually searched for. Giving you the average number of searches per month for a particular keyword phrase. This is where you’ll discover how many people actually search for ‘bootcamp youtown’ compared to ‘fitness classes yourtown’

2. Google

Er yes this IS an important tool to discover who is your competitors for the keywords you want to be found for, and of course know where you are ranked for that keyword too!

For any new project I start with, how many searches (Keyword Tool), compared to competition (Google), if there are brand names dominating that keyword then I generally look elsewhere!

3. Website Grader

This is a nifty tool for taking a look at your business website and seeing how well you’ve got it set up for Search Engine Optimisation. Simply enter your websites address, and an email address and let it do its thing.

Website Grader will then give you all sorts of feedback about what you can do to improve the way your site is set up and optimised.

4. WordPress Plugin: WordPress SEO by Yoast

Writing articles and pages on your website is all well and good, but if they are not optimised fully for the keywords you want to be found for then it is wasted effort. Thankfully setting the attributes for a page or post on wordpress has been made dramatically easier with this plugin.

This is a recent discovery for me, and it has been installed on every new site I’ve had built since. It allows you to easily set the important SEO attributes for a Page or Post on your wordpress website. It even has a simple check system to make sure you’ve done everything possible to make each post/page perfectly set up. It is 2 minutes extra work after writing the article that will make the world of difference.

If you have a personal trainer website or BLOG built on a WordPress platform, get this plugin installed today.

5. Pingler

Pinging is one of those things that many people don’t know about… It is a kinda geeky thing after all. However what it does is when you’ve written a new BLOG post, or updated your website, if you Ping that webpage it’ll send a notification to computers around the world that it has been updated. This can and does make a significant difference to the search engine rankings of a site.

Whilst a single ping will not make a big difference, as a regular part of your content creation process, all those pings make a huge difference.

Pingler is the FREE service I use on a daily basis to Ping my new BLOG posts and domains. Simply enter your Page/Post title, the web address of the page you’ve updated, and select a category that fits with your post.

Time To Do Some Blatant Self Promotion!

I am going to blow my own trumpet this week, and I would be doing you a disservice if I didn’t tell you about Fitness Google Domination. Whilst I’ve given you some of my most useful cool tools for SEO, this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the depth of stuff in my new program.

This program is all about getting you ALL OVER google’s first page for the things your prospects search for! Many fitness professionals are just scared of this stuff, but I’ve had even the most techno phobic guys doing this stuff with ease…

Go check out the program over at the website Fitness Google Domination

The Ultimate Personal Trainer Business Card

You Trust Me Right?

People buy stuff from people they know, like and trust. You’ve probably heard that before… But where does that trust come from? How do you acquire the trust of another?

The fact is the first thing people think about stuff they find on the internet is

‘Is this guy gonna SCAM me?’

Getting over this is not easy.

The personal trainer business I had in luxembourg was a success in garnering trust due to a preponderance of PROOF!! Evidence that I was a real person and that I was an expert in the field of health and fitness.

I was EVERYWHERE and you need to be too!

It’s not good enough to have your business on one entry on Google’s search rankings. To create this preponderance of proof you need to paint the whole of Page 1 with your stuff. This means taking up as much internet real estate as possible with your content.

  • Article
  • Videos
  • Social Media Pages
  • BLOGs
  • You business websites
  • Backlinks from Directories
  • and many many other pieces of prime real estate.

You probably do something very similar in the offline world already, by getting articles in the local paper, sponsoring local charity events, flyering, organising speaking events, participating in the local 5k race, member of a local business network… You are EVERYWHERE, this is no different to the online world.

The Ultimate Personal Trainer Business Card

Here’s the cool bit about creating the online domination. When I meet someone at an event, instead of giving them a business card or a flyer, all I would say is

“do a search for Personal Trainer Luxembourg, and you’ll find me”

I didn’t need a personal trainer business card, Google was my business card!

It told my prospects everything they needed to know about me and my business. It created that instant TRUST, you don’t need to sell them anything, you don’t do any ‘persuasion‘, Google provided all the persuasive stuff for people to make up their own mind about hiring me… this is way more powerful!

Creating this level of PROOF is not as difficult as you may think.

It is a PROCESS like many other aspects of your business, learned once by you, then delegated to an admin assistant to do the donkey work. Just click a few buttons here, and away you go!

Most of the personal trainers in your area are really bad at this stuff, which makes the game of dominating Google easy for you. You’ll be reaping the benefits of creating this TRUST for years to come.

Fitness Google Domination is my brand new program showing you the PROCESS for taking over the Google rankings. Create your Google personal trainer business card today.

Tim

P.S. The other day I got a Facebook message from the editor of the local magazine in Luxembourg ask for content, or comment on an article. I left Luxembourg over 6 months ago, but it seems I am STILL the trusted source of information. Looking at the google rankings it is not difficult to see why!

“Are There Any Other Trainers In Town?”

I smiled when I heard these words from the new client I had just signed up to a 2,500 Euro personal training package, because it reminded me of a conversation I’d had a few weeks prior with “another trainer in town”.

The other trainer was certainly my main competitor for getting PT clients, he was a great coach, we had a lot of mutual respect and occasionally referred clients to each other if the client was going to get better results with the ‘other’ coach.

SEO Basics For Personal Trainers

The other trainer told me, he had ‘GIVEN UP’ trying to beat me on the internet, because I was EVERYWHERE… At the time I think his single site was ranking on page 4 (when was the last time you viewed page 4 of the Google rankings, when searching for something?)This pie chart showing the distribution of clicks based on where you are ranked on Google…Google traffic by Rank

42% of the clicks go to #1 search result… but take over the entire front page and you will net 90% of the clicks.

Most people think about trying to get just one website ranked on Google, but given the way the evil bods at Google HQ change their fancy algorithm every few months I am not willing to put all my eggs in one basket seeing my website suddenly disappear from the search rankings. I know this has happened to many fit pro’s this year, and their business has suffered!

How Is It Possible To Get More Than One Search Result?

Google want to provide ‘RELEVANT’ and ‘POPULAR’ content for their search results, so they’ll pick all the most relevant and popular web pages for the front page… So here is what kind of stuff they’ll show…

  1. Brand name websites (Eg. nike, cos they are BIG and they pay google lots of cash) (this is a recent revelation to googles algorithm)
  2. Websites that have the right domain names the same or close to what has been searched for. personaltraineroxford.com will out rank austinlawrence.com (sorry buddy) when someone searches for “personal trainer oxford”
  3. Videos… more specifically YouTube videos, Google owns YouTube so having videos is a killer easy way to get on Page 1
  4. Social Media… hotter than a hot thing on a hot day in Arizona, Get a Google+ account with the right words in your profile and you’ll smoke to the front page of Google!
  5. Articles… an oldie but a goodie, article content still rocks, get the title right and link back to your site… it all helps
  6. Common interest directories… get your business/site listed on nrpt.co.uk if you are in the UK, trainersusa.com if you are in the States
  7. BLOGS, BLOGS and yet more BLOGS… start a blog, write on it, keep writing on it…. errr keep writing on it! You get the drift.

Sound, like a lot of hard work?

Yes it is, but well worth it given the value of being all over Google’s front page.

I did the Math the other day to figure out how much #1 on Google is worth to a Personal Trainer, I’ve recorded a video to show you all about this stuff, that I’ll release tomorrow or Friday… keep you eyes peeled for the email to click that link.
