4 Reasons Why I Decided to Renew My REP’s Membership

Today I will discuss my personal reasons for renewing my REP’s membership, and I chuckle at the fact that this is a controversial subject, for some.

Joining any professional association or registering with a regulator may seem like an unnecessary use of your time and money, particularly in testing economic times.

Paying out your money and not seeing an immediate (or any) tangible return is frustrating.

Our industry is plagued with young and inexperienced ‘health & fitness professionals’ who have taken sub-standard qualifications, who may not have public liability insurance or first aid training or who are simply claiming to be what they are not.

These individuals are stealing your business and may be putting the public at risk.

How many number ones, expert trainers can there be in one area?

I ask myself the question, why cant we just give your word that we will “be a good fitness professional” and leave it at that?  After all, we are on the whole, decent folk trying to help people.  Apparently some people are not as trustworthy as you and I and need to be reminded to keep their tools sharp.

In addition to the fairy tale websites of some trainers, you may have seen the sharing and licencing of testimonials and case studies by some bootcamp franchise groups.  These are just little signs that the public are not getting a fair and honest deal when it comes to fitness marketing.  American people giving testimonials for British bootcamps is that honest straight up marketing?

REP’s is an optional thing and no one has to join and as I’m sure you know, in our industry you don’t legally need any fitness related qualifications to be a personal trainer.

This article may be something I regret, as last time I wrote something about REPs I felt the wrath of many fitness professionals who did not feel the same, plus I spent the following few days responding to all the bloody comments.  That was a big pain in the arse! lol

My mother always taught me if you have nothing good to say, then say f**k all! (She always did have a foul mouth)

But seriously, it’s easy to criticise organisations such as REPs and I’m not here to get into the politics or conspiracy theories that they are fascists and “they take backhanders to get courses certified and all that”.

However they don’t get off scot free, even me who is pretty laid back, and I try not to sweat stuff I cant control, can see they are far from perfect… in many ways they do not represent our industry (for whatever reason). They have not even delivered on some of their basic goals, such as raising public awareness of who they are, and pushing the fitness industry standards up.

They do not check your paperwork with a fine tooth comb or come after you if you don’t submit it, people commented last time I wrote an article and said they had nothing checked for over 3 years.  It’s a self regulatory kinda thing I guess! ;-(

With regards REP’s my thought process and decision to join was simple, as I outline below.

For some people however joining REP’s or similar organisations it’s not a simple decision.  It becomes some deeply thought out philosophical decision or one that is politically driven, driven by negativity or a sort of righteous stance against the machine…its all good in tha hood either way, we all make our own choices in life.

All that aside, here are my, reasons why I rejoined REPs again this year:

  1. It’s our only choice for now.  They are the only independent professional (cough) body who can confirm what I say about myself is true.  Until such organisations such as the main man – Dax Moys, personal trainer mastery come to fruition, REPs is all we have got.  Like it or not, I believe you should be independently checked to make sure you meet the MINIMUM standards if you’re a health professional.  Properly qualified, insured and first aid trained.
  2. My clients like it.  My professional and corporate clients like professional associations and are members of them themselves.  I work with solicitors, barristers, doctors and dentists, all of whom are members of professional and/or regulatory bodies.  They have specifically said they initially came to me because I (my set up) is professional and the real deal, someone who can get results.
  3. It covers my arse … a little bit more.  Im not an expert on this and have never been to court.  However I do know in today’s world it’s more likely that you will get sued or taken to court by a client if you screw up their health or worse.  Some of the Dr’s I work with have 1-2 legal cases ongoing at any one time, and this is apparently the norm in their profession.  If in the unlikely outcome that you end up in court for hurting someone (whether it was your fault or not).  As long as you were working within the boundaries of your qualifications you have insurance and up to date first aid – you should be fine. I believe many trainers tread a fine line and do not stay within the boundaries of their quals, I have seen some diagnose medical conditions and prescribe treatment, er that was a Dr’s Job last time I checked? And you can get in deep trouble for prescribing supplements to specifically rectify medical problems (unless your qualified). I would imagine being a member of a professional organisation is better in the eyes of the court/judge/law etc.  I am a member of REP’s, and other similarly disorganised, (bullsh*t) associations such as the SMA (sports massage association) and BACR (cardiac rehab, these are quite good in fairness).  Each of these bodies checks my skills and paperwork are up to date. This would potentially show the court that I have taken every step possible to protect my client.  Alternatively, if you did hurt someone and were not a member of any regulatory body and in addition your insurance, risk assessments, PAR Q and or first aid had slipped……well, negligence comes to mind, and that’s all the court has to prove.  These organisations also offer different levels of service and legal advice to its members if they are in the sh*t.
  4. It’s cheap & easy.  Membership costs £29, or £84 with insurance and the online application is relatively easy if you have your paperwork in order.  You need photocopies of your qualifications including first aid and copies of your insurance, with cover up to £5,000,000.  You also need a copy of your CV and a letter of authenticity, to authenticate your fitness qualifications.

That’s why I rejoined REP’s.  Would  I join a similar organisation if it existed and offered something better? Yes.  Until now I guess I use reps to give myself a little more credibility over some of the other numpties and less professional trainers in my town.

(I say this tentatively) Agree or disagree? Leave your comments below, are you a lover (member) or a hater of REP’s?  Can you find a few reasons why it may be worth it?

Peace x

PS – See you at F.E.B this weekend, please come say Hi to Tim and I! x

A New Way To Get Paid For Training

I suppose people have been talking about a cashless society for like EVER… I doubt it’ll ever come to the point where you will not get paid in cash for your classes or personal training, but earlier this year during a internet marketing seminar in Austin I was shown a neat little tool that fixed to the top of your iphone was essentially a credit card swiping device!

SquareUp.com

Currently only available in the US, this cool device allows you to take credit card payments when you meet with a client, no merchant account required, you only need a iphone or android phone, the application for your device and the attachment (which is free by the way!)

The Credit Card holder, gets to enter an email or phone number to receive the receipt and then they sign their name with their finger on the phone.

You only need a bank account, and the money appears in your account within the next 24 hours!

Just imagine at your free taster sessions for you bootcamp, or a seminar you put on, or whilst you are sitting with your prospect at the initial consultation, being able to take payment there and then!

New York City cabbies are now using this to take payments!

Is There A European Equivalent?

iZettle.se is currently the only one I have found that is available in just a few scandinavian countries, based on the same principles, you can take payments through your iPhone or iPad.

I love the basic principles of this because of the ease of use and the change in perception your end client has of you and your business.

I made a rule in my business right from the early days that I would NOT accept cash payments for my training.

Weird huh? Surely a small business owner would love to get cash… cos cash is cash right?

For me collecting cash from the back of my car at the beginning and end of my camps was just ugly, it meant that I was constantly chasing people for payment, and made everyone involved uncomfortable, if there was any confusion about who had or had not paid me!

I insisted that people paid me upfront via Paypal for my group training programs. Because I ran a 12 session (4 week) progressively overloading training program, there was a definite start and end date and people never paid for just the sessions they came too. To join the program you had to sign up for the entire month in advance!

  • I could better track who had paid…
  • It made my bookkeeping and accounting much easier
  • And I never needed to worry about my other trainers having to debt collect clients or handle cash.

The New (Old) Kid on The Block!

Earlier this week Paypal announced their own version of Squareup and iZettle…Its called “Paypal Here” with a odd looking triangular device that fits on to your iPhone.

Now given that Paypal is not starting from scratch and you have a stronger brand awareness with Paypal they are going to dominate this instant payments market. And given the simplicity of registering and using Paypal it is going to be an instant hit.

They’ve launched in the US, Canada, Hong Kong and Australia. However I anticipate wider launch within the next 6 -12 months through Europe too.

There are so many applications for the use of this type of payment process it really does excite me!

How do you take payment for your training right now? Cash, MindBody(OptimalPayments), Paypal, bank transfer?

Why Capital is King – You Need Money to Make Money

In today’s article I will outline why having some cash on the hip is great for your fitness business and being broke as a joke is no laughing matter.

In my experience money speeds your progress to your goal.

Just take a look at how much it costs to enter any high end mastermind group – £3500 upwards, and that’s without the cost of travelling and accommodation.

People only do this because the information they will learn will make them their investment over and over and over – when they apply it to their business.

Here on PTC we are getting some requests to help people with their fitness business.

It seems that the free articles are just getting peoples appetite wet and what people want is someone to hold them by the hand and take them through things step by step.  Exactly what Tim and I had when we started out.

People have said they have so much information from all the various sources they just don’t know where to start!  They said they don’t know what the best order to do things in is.

That’s fair enough.

Guess what a little bit of money to hire an expert or a coach would do to this situation?

Make it a hell of a lot easier!

The best investment is in you and your future!

It is said that the teacher appears when the student is ready, and spookily for me this was very true.

I sought out a business mentor many years ago and struggled to “connect” with any of the old farts who were putting themselves forward for the task.  One guy told me to grow my hair.

Cheeky git, his hair was worse than mine!  Funny thing was I actually did grow my hair for about 3 months and got some strange looks!!

I digress, back to why money brings the honey.

Four Reasons Why Capital is King

  1. Value for money.  You can get better deals if you pay cash. (always get a receipt if paying cash)
  2. Flexibility & Problem Solving.  People who have capital can come through “mini” problems, such as a treadmill breaking down’s much smoother than those who are strapped for cash.
  3. Accelerated Learning.  People progress faster when they can afford to pay other people for information, advice, specialist services or pay for a mentor.
  4. Peace of Mind & Confidence.  You will sleep better if you have money behind you compared to having none.  You will be more confident when you have more money behind you.  If you are skint and have bills coming out of your ears it’s not a good feeling, and saps your energy and motivation, as I’m sure you may already know.

Fools & Their Money Are Soon Parted

Firstly I must say that I have wasted so much money over the years, going out partying, on new clothes and gambling.   So I guess I was the fool in more ways than one.

One time I had £20 grand and decided to set up a new business, boy did I screw up with my capital.  I almost had too much money and was too keen (or stupid).

I wasted so much money over buying equipment I still have some of it unused ;-(.  I over staffed the business and overspent on advertising.

Lots of lessons learnt.  Lots of money wasted.

I’m not here to preach, or sound like your Dad, just to share my experiences so you can progress faster and with a bit more money in your pocket.

People may think that we all deserve a night out once a week.  People may deserve that new car or a similar little treat.

Maybe they are right.  Maybe they are wrong.

You may say it’s fine if you can afford it.  Suicide if you can’t.

Leave your comments below on this point. I would really love to hear your experience! Are you willing to sacrifice your night out for business success?

More recently, especially since I have been married and have a family, I have become more frugal with my money and much more sensible with my spending.

For me it comes down to investing or wasting your money and having either liabilities or assets.

A night out partying is a waste of money but a night in working on my website is an investment (and a saving! double bubble).

The cost of a night out, whether it be a meal or a few dinks can range anywhere from £50-£150, for me and my wife personally anyway.

I have spoken to some fledgling personal trainers, (whilst out having a few drinks) who have openly said they didn’t yet have a website or uniform or business cards, without these basics you don’t have much of a start in the PT business.

I love where I live in Swansea as lots of millionaires come here to retire.

However the trouble sometimes in South Wales and other areas of the UK is the HUGE amount of people who want to succeed in business but lack any capital to invest in the process.  Saving is not something people can afford or want to do.

To be completely honest unless it involves getting blotto lots of them don’t want to do much at all.

Try to save up 10% of all your money, or just 5% to get you a bank roll started.  One thing is for sure in life and business is you will always need money.

Things which need money, continual investment and development:

  • Books, Info products, Ongoing Education, Courses and Seminars
  • Mastermind Groups
  • Software – Easy Video player (marketing video embed and upload), Camtasia(screen cast), Pinnacle(video editor)
  • Graphic Design (logos, e-posters, website artwork)
  • Photo’s
  • Web Design & Updates
  • Business Cards
  • Printing
  • Equipment – exercise equipment and electrical items such as – microphone, laptop, video camera & tripod, projector…
  • Uniform – you have to look the part in our industry more so than others

You say you don’t have any money just yet…

Ok, try this to get the money flowing in your direction and learning some cool stuff.

If you have no money this hopefully and logically means you have some spare time.  Invest the one commodity we all have, TIME, that can be turned into money.

Use your time to read articles and learn some cool stuff to boost your business up such as search engine optimisation (SEO).  This is time heavy stuff but has a massive value when you convert it to an actual page one ranking.

Tim has written a great a great report to help get you up and flying with SEO, knocking your competitors off page one of Google.

Write articles, record videos and podcasts which are all low cost or free ways to get you going and increase the amount of bookings you get in.

When you do have money prioritise your spending, make a list.

For example go on a course, improve your website, buy new uniform and business cards, get a mentor or business coach or both.

Invest in yourself in every possible way.

That’s my take on why capital is king, it gives you choice, freedom and flexibility.

Five Cool Tools You’ll Want To Use

I’ve been asked a fair bit about different resources that I use for my business, my websites and other stuff that makes my life easier… So this post gives a couple of resources that I like and also a bit of a shout out to some programs other fitness professionals have created recently.

In the interests of transparency some of these links ARE affiliate links which means if you decide to invest in any of these programs I may make enough money to buy a cup of coffee or two from Starbucks. So with the legal and generally polite stuff out the way, lets dive in.

1. Book recommendation

Guerrilla Marketing – Jay Conrad Levinson

This book has been on my “to-read” list for years and this month I at last got a chance to read it. Now there are many things in here that I wish I’d known about earlier in my business life. An easy read for any budding entrepreneur!

2. Social Media Tool

5 Minute Fan pages

This is something I started playing with in early November. Facebook seem to change their criteria for Facebook business pages like every week. 5 Minute Fan Pages is a great templated tool for getting a Facebook Fan Page created in double quick time. It allows you to create those fancy “hidden” pages that encourage people to “like” your page before getting access to the content.

I’ve tried lots of Fan Page tools over the last 18 months and this is definitely the easiest one yet for people to use!

3. WordPress Plugin

WordPress Facebook Like Button

Adding a Facebook like button to your pages and posts on your BLOG is essential these days to allow folk to “share” your great content with their FB friends. This plugin simply does that without needing to code or any of that horrid stuff. Install the plugin, decide where you want the button to go, and its done…

You’ll see it is added to the bottom of all my BLOG posts

4. Shout Out For A Fit Pro Created Product

Super Fast Info Products For The Fitness Professional

Creator of this program, Gavin Walsh, sent me a preview copy of this e-book a few weeks back and I was impressed by the ZERO fluff nature of the product. It cuts straight to the chase and explains in detail how to get an information product created ready for sale.

Many people know that I am BIG in to creating multiple income streams, that are semi passive or passive that help pay some bills or give you a buffer when things go slack with your PT or bootcamps. This program is a steal and shows you how simple it is to get a product created.

5. Coming Soon…

Loads of folk have already downloaded “The Principle Of Slight Edge” report (around the 100 mark) which is a NON techy guide to getting one over on your local competitors in the race to get to page one of Google. I am in the final stages of pulling together a BIG program that will take you step by step to Fitness Google Domination, keep your eyes peeled for that one cos I have some cool stuff planned for the launch of that program.

In the meantime if you’ve not got the report yet, go to the website Fitness Google Domination to request your copy

The Number 1 Technical Skill For Personal Trainers

Saturday morning in my house is generally a bit lazy, I got up late, took the dogs for a walk along the beach with my wife, Sam, then dropped in at my favourite cafe for a cup of black… I go for the view!

Whilst all this sounds wonderfully idyllic, I got thinking about the basic requirements for a fitness professional to run a business, like the view that I’ve started to take for granted, I also take for granted the IT skills I own and how they make a huge difference for my business.

10 years ago you would say that basic computer skills, being able to use a mouse, use Microsoft Word and possibly Excel were the things that were essential for running ANY small business

5 years ago this would have been using email and being able to surf the internet effectively.

Now the technology has changed again and the internet is interactive, its social.

From my perspective the number one skill to have as a personal trainer business is the ability to PUBLISH. This means producing content that is published on a BLOG, and then distributed further afield to other websites.

Right now THE publishing tool of choice is WordPress.

Now if you’ve been following my own BLOGs for a few years you’ll know that I’ve long been an advocate of the WordPress platform. In fact I would say that I’ve been working with WordPress for 4 years plus and created in excess of 300 websites or BLOGs for myself and  my clients.

  • WordPress powers 15% of the top one million websites on the Internet.
  • WordPress can be used as a blog, website, eCommerce site etc….
  • WordPress powers 22% of all new websites on the Internet.
  • WordPress is also free.

I can safely say that WordPress is no flash-in-the-pan fad, it will NOT disappear in 6 months.

Here’s why you should KNOW WordPress

  • After a really short learning process, it is by far the easiest and fastest way to publish your content on the web.
  • Having regular content published and communicated to your clients and prospects, develops know, like and trust. This is essential if you wish to tell them about your products and services and for them to want to invest in you!
  • On WordPress your readers can post comments on your content, allowing you to have a discussion with them.
  • WordPress allows you to ADD functionality to your website, for example adding a members only area is just a 15 minute job, creating a gallery is a handful of clicks, even adding things such as a shopping cart or a forum is super easy too!

But lets not get carried away, the primary purpose is for you to PUBLISH your content. Articles, BLOG posts, audios and videos.

If you know Microsoft Word then learning to publish your content on a WordPress based website is crazy simple.

Watch the video below to see how easy it is to edit content.

So where can you learn more about WordPress?

Right now there is a great tutorial program being run by Appsumo.com (one of my favourite websites right now) which shows absolute WordPress Virgin’s how to get started with WordPress.

This program will give you a great primer for getting to know how to create a new WordPress site, add and edit pages, posts and lots of other cool stuff too.
